Over the centuries the great houses of Europe have been decorated with large, highly decorative figurative or pastoral tapestries bringing a feeling of luxury and grandeur to the rooms where they hang.<br />
This months World of Interiors shows a flat in Paris decorated by the Spanish designer Isabel López-Quesada with a large Chinoiserie tapestry on the drawing room wall.<br />

<div style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
These are the latest framed prints to go up on the wall in the shop. Amazing colour, they are a large set of early 19th century prints of mushrooms with wonderful original colour. We chose to frame them in water gilt frames with ivory coloured paint and cracked gessoed mounts with gilt bevels.<br />
<br />
The prints were published in France in 1832....the mushrooms are depicted life size....give the dining room walls a fresh look and add some colour.<br />

There is a bright side, the pound is now at a 31 year low against the US dollar, so for all of you on the other side of the pond we are now cheaper than we have been for years! It's also pretty good for the Euro zone.<br />
If you are looking for some great European furniture we have a good and stylish selection in the shop and on our website.<br />

This entails digging huge holes in the road and sending the traffic off in the opposite direction.....well at least around the block, so getting here can be a bit of an adventure at the moment. Though I don't remember the London cab driver calling it an adventure last week....when I jumped into his taxi. The works, which started at the end of February, are destined to last until October this year. So shopping from the website might be less stressful for the time being! We have a page with new items that is updated regularly click <a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/newstuff.html" target="_blank">here</a> to see it<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next week the saga of the gas main escalates as our part of the King's Road becomes one way heading into town, for the rest of the works. They have very kindly put up placards to tell the passers by that all the shops are open "as usual" not sure I would agree about the usual part but we are all open and here!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
More soon.........</div>

Set in a grounds with mature Cypress trees, oleanders and native oaks lies this little gem that we disappear to when we want some peace and quiet.<br />

The smell of the cypress fill ones soul on arriving and then the wonderful southern aromas of the wild thyme and rosemary kick in and you know that you have arrived. the winding drive takes us up to the house..<br />

The house isn't large just three bedrooms all giving onto the garden with a wonderful large terrace with views over the local vineyards towards the coast with the Massif des Maures in the distance.<br />
All year round it is warm enough to have lunch outside on this terrace and in the summer we move to the pool house for lunch with friends in the shade over looking the pool.<br />

The garden is half wild and half formal with clipped hedges, spectacular wisteria, roses, jasmine, oleander and so many other plants I can't remember them all. In the spring and then again in the autumn the wild flowers come out and the grass below the house is covered in small dots of colour</div>

I love to decorate the table with antique linen table cloths and napkins, they add a certain something to the look, in the evenings I always use candles with plenty of candlesticks and flowers are a must….<br />

We have lots of new stock and the shop is looking great. Tapestries that have become a great love are in the window and hanging on the walls. They are the perfect wall hanging to keep the cold out. In the past they were a sign of prosperity as only the rich could afford them. They also looked wonderful and were a reminder of warmer weather with their luxurious trees and plants, and cavorting Gods from mythology; they also served as a barrier between the freezing cold walls of the unheated castles and grand houses of Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.<br />
<br />
Decorating many large houses, they are the grandest of decoration and no longer need to serve as insulation…..<br />

Behind a later <a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/commode2085.html" target="_blank">Empire period commode</a>, an <a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/tapestry2319.html" target="_blank">antique tapestry</a> always adds grandeur and warmth to a room.<br />
<img alt="" src="http://www.juliaboston.com/_IMAGES/2297.jpg" height="1275" width="850" /><br />
Here a late 17th century tapestry hangs behind a French Restauration period commode with a pair of Louis XV style <a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/chandelier2297.html" target="_blank">gilt lanterns</a> hanging in front<br />
<img alt="" src="http://www.juliaboston.com/_IMAGES/2250view.jpg" height="1257" width="850" /><br />

Here a large Louis XV <a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/table2321.html" target="_blank">Console de Gibier </a>stands in front of a tapestry with a pair of early 19th century chairs on either side.<br />
<br />
<img alt="20th Century Modern Tapestry By Jean Picart Le Doux. Woven in wool with a black, green and yellow cockerel or rooster on a pale blue ground with yellow stars. Decoration both modern and old, furniture, lighting and objects." src="http://www.juliaboston.com/_IMAGES/2236view.jpg" height="1200" width="764" /><br />
Here the 20th century is joined by the 18th century a wonderful <a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/tapestry2236.html" target="_blank">tapestry by Jean Picard le Doux</a>, in perfect condition hangs above a beautiful <a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/commode2152.html" target="_blank">Louis XVI plumb pudding mahogany commode</a>, the white background of the tapestry and the white marble of the commode seem to link the two pieces.<br />
Where ever you hang a tapestry it adds warmth and character to a room they are a fraction of the cost of a large painting and bring with them a history and a grandeur from the past that is unparalleled……<br />

In homage to 1stdibs article Modern Elegance vs Old World Glamour, we side with the latter…….</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
There is a richness and timelessnes that comes with using antiques when you decorate. The rich colours and textures in old textiles and the patina of antique furniture evoque the historic houses or Europe. There is a warmth that comes with this look that is totally different from the modern interior.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS4LequhIx-XBiP7_PPvwVZHbYCOBFytds-6DlQMT9hcf1cw6fKT-5Rj364JGcwg6oynvU_m25hStCVYZMUhyphenhyphenhuLgHPkKJKazlBOyyThEptPxcAtCSlbyQmTkpFaGwshTeqlKQGd67itI/s1600/Henrietta+Sencer+Churchill+photo+Christopher+Drake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS4LequhIx-XBiP7_PPvwVZHbYCOBFytds-6DlQMT9hcf1cw6fKT-5Rj364JGcwg6oynvU_m25hStCVYZMUhyphenhyphenhuLgHPkKJKazlBOyyThEptPxcAtCSlbyQmTkpFaGwshTeqlKQGd67itI/s1600/Henrietta+Sencer+Churchill+photo+Christopher+Drake.jpg" height="338" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
In this drawing room designed by the British designer <a href="http://www.spencerchurchilldesigns.com/" target="_blank">Henrietta Spencer Churchill</a> the use of colour and antiques creates a grand yet welcoming room flood with light coming in through the large window on the left. Here another London designer, <a href="http://www.alidad.com/" target="_blank">Alidad</a> layers the rich textures and colours of an early 18th century tapestry hung behind a gloriously coloured sofa. Photo by James McDonald.<br />

Always lovers of tapestries we have several in the shop at the moment. Here a figurative Louis XIV Aubusson tapestry takes up a whole wall with furniture in front.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIoiG1VRoI2gI4Bq5WpsN0GksjAzb3sriDFygolaRCNpfBYTHMLy7eH-XdAUj-AnJb-G8KJ2zLtgQt4HtlPjooSa0EwbHrlmIpUuKRlAGpz1kPonKtiy0Y8nnD9s9CkBFr51n8LVXcDPE/s1600/Jacques+Garcia+photo+Eric+Sander.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIoiG1VRoI2gI4Bq5WpsN0GksjAzb3sriDFygolaRCNpfBYTHMLy7eH-XdAUj-AnJb-G8KJ2zLtgQt4HtlPjooSa0EwbHrlmIpUuKRlAGpz1kPonKtiy0Y8nnD9s9CkBFr51n8LVXcDPE/s1600/Jacques+Garcia+photo+Eric+Sander.jpg" height="336" width="640" /></a></div>
The Chateau de <a href="http://www.chateauduchampdebataille.com/" target="_blank">Champ du Bataille</a> decorated by <a href="http://studiojacquesgarcia.com/en/" target="_blank">Jacques Garcia</a> has a grandeur that can only be achieved using antiques. Photograph by Eric Sander.<br />

The walls are hung with portraits in carved gilt frames and the furniture is French 18th century.<br />
Here in the shop we have hung a pair of 18th century seascapes in gilt frames above a Louis XVI commode.<br />
<div>
<a href="http://williamreubanks.com/" target="_blank">William Eubanks</a> uses a grand Louis XV commode to great effect in this room.<br />

In the shop we have placed a Règence French commode in front of a late 17th century Flemish tapestry. Tables are always something that are needed, for a bunch of flowers or to put your drink on when you relax at the end of the day, these are some of the ones that we have in stock at the moment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

this elegant George IV library table, would look good behind a sofa with an elegant bunch of flowers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You also need tables against the wall and we always have a good selection of consoles on show, this one was made by the celebrated French <i>'eboniste'</i> or furniture maker Jacob</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/table2109.html" target="_blank"><img alt="view" src="http://www.juliaboston.com/_IMAGES/2109-16.jpg" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
or if you have a large wall this impressive console probably also by Jacob would make a grand statement; seen here below a collection of 18th century black and white engravings.</div>

<div>
This Règence commode was made in the first part of the 18th century and the richness of the colour of the veneers is wonderful. </div>
<div>
We always have a selection of 18th and 19th century French commodes for the drawing room or the bedroom.</div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/commode2085.html" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.juliaboston.com/commode2085.html" src="http://www.juliaboston.com/_IMAGES/2085-704-1.jpg" height="564" width="850" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Made whilst Napoleon Bonarparte was ruling France, simple lines make this a great piece for the dining room the doors open to reveal a single shelf.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Whilst this 20th century tapestry '<i>CHANT</i>' by Francois Baron-Renouard woven in Paris in the 60's brings a splash of colour at a fraction of the cost of a contemporary painting!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We have several great pieces arriving in the next few weeks, to see new arrivals check out our "<a href="http://www.juliaboston.com/newstuff.html" target="_blank">New Arrivals</a>' section of the webs site. </div>
